Illegal forever |
|
|
The ongoing saga of Council incompetence seemed to just go on
compounding, with their internal inquiry as to why everything went so
wrong more concerned with covering backs than with either the
environment or the systemic causes of their failures.

Iwi kaupapa for Karaka Bay
Iwi consultation is concerned on the one hand with ensuring respect for
Maori values, and on the other hand with protecting whakapapa. Thus
Maori are concerned with mauri and wairua on the one hand and
kaitiakitanga on the other. Karaka Bay is one of the most significant
sites in Auckland. The mauri is strong and the stories are rich. Karaka
Bay abounds in middens and in history. It is here that iwi consultation
comes into focus.

Damn lies |
|
|
When someone feels the need to lie you need to ask what they are trying
to cover up and why. Glyn Jones, Media Manager for the Auckland City
Council, fed a litany of lies about Karaka Bay, rather than just a
single lie, to the media. Indeed everything he said was a lie.

Brief history |
|
|
Around 6000 years ago the sea level was much lower. It rose, and then
the beach became more or less stable. The ecology adjusted, as it
always does, until we reached the situation where most recent arrivals
thought it had always been like that.

Global context |

The Murray syndrome |
|
|
Murray had a brilliant mind but was hopelessly incompetent at
relationships. It was a trap because it was easy to imagine that he
must see connections when in fact they were quite beyond him. Murray
was famous, for example, for never having said hello to colleagues
although he had worked with them for more than twenty years.
