I had cycled down to Fribourg from London before to attend Pax Romana Directing Committee meetings. This time I was carrying on to India and Singapore.
To get through the Middle East before winter closed the Khyber Pass I had to cross the Alps before the snow had receded.
The roads were closed. I had to put my bicycle on my back and walk over the Alps. More than anything else I remember the look on the face of the warden when I knocked on the door of a Youth Hostel which had been isolated for several weeks.
