At Karaka Bay it was a tradition that when anyone brought their own Herald down the hill they also brought everyone else’s Heralds down. Quite apart from issues of courtesy and friendship it made common sense. When everyone helped everyone else it made life easier for everyone.
Bob Griffith was shocked then when Doug Armstrong asked him to not bring down my Herald as part of Doug’s campaign to drive me out of the Bay. Such vindictive, destructive, selfish behaviour was incomprehensible to kindly Bob. When Bob recovered enough to realise what Doug was asking he naturally refused to be bullied. Doug felt he was powerful, but it was Bob’s integrity which made him more powerful, without any need for power.
The debate as to whether power corrupts or simply attracts the corruptible remains open, although research is ongoing.
